YOUR STUDENT ALREADY USES AI. DO THEY KNOW HOW IT WORKS?
Chatbots answer their questions. Apps decide what they watch next. Cameras recognize faces. Most kids use AI every day without knowing how it learns, why it makes mistakes, or when a human needs to step in.
What Is AI? gives your middle schooler those answers in 12 lessons over 4 weeks (or longer). It starts with an adventure story that makes them care, then builds real understanding with hands-on labs, worksheets, and Scripture-based reflection.
📖 THE STORY: THE WATCHDOG PROTOCOL
Inside the Race to Train an AI
An invitation arrives at Truthspire Castle. The Wrathmore Founders' Gala will unveil MAMMON, "The Mind of the Market," an AI that knows what you want before you do, never sleeps, and is always hungry. Its swarm of data-collecting Harvester drones is already headed for the castle.
The Truth Seekers have days, not weeks. They build an AI called Watchdog to spot the Harvesters, and its first field test nearly nets one of the puppies. Along the way, they learn that what you show a machine is what it becomes, that a machine can be sure and still be wrong, and that a language model can sound confident about things it made up.
Nearly 12,000 words of action, humor, and two very smart puppies. The story ends with a Lesson Tie-In Map that shows which chapters pair with which lessons.
🔧 WHAT IS STEAM SEEKERS?
STEAM Seekers is a story-driven curriculum for homeschool families and classrooms. Your guide is Tania Torchlight, who follows the Truth Seekers, a team of inventors and scientists at Truthspire Castle, and writes down what they discover. Every unit pairs an original adventure with hands-on lessons, and every lesson points back to the truth that creation reflects design.
📚 THE 12 LESSONS (4-WEEK PACING PLAN)
Week 1
- Lesson 1: What Is Artificial Intelligence? (the 5 big ideas of AI)
- Lesson 2: Algorithms: How Computers Follow Instructions
Week 2
- Lesson 3: Datasets, Patterns & Predictions
- Lesson 4: Three Types of Machine Learning
- Lesson 5: Train Your Own AI (hands-on, Part 1)
- Lesson 6: Improve Your AI (hands-on, Part 2)
Week 3
- Lesson 7: Generative AI: How AI Creates
- Lesson 8: Bias in AI: Where It Comes From
- Lesson 9: The Real Cost of AI
Week 4
- Lesson 10: How AI Uses Your Data: Privacy & Facial Recognition
- Lesson 11: Recommendation Systems & When Humans Should Step In
- Lesson 12: AI, Ethics & Being a Wise Digital Citizen
🛠 HANDS-ON LABS
Students don't just read about machine learning. They do it. Using Google's Teachable Machine, they build an image classifier, test it, watch it fail, and then improve it. A Quick, Draw! pattern activity shows how a machine learns from examples, and unplugged activities make ideas like algorithms and bias easy to see.
✅ WHAT'S INCLUDED
- Original adventure story: The Watchdog Protocol
- 12 lessons with a short, textbook-style reading in each
- An original steampunk diagram in every lesson to study and discuss
- Printable worksheets with example answers, so you can guide without being an AI expert
- Unit review quiz
- Optional video suggestions for extra depth
- Faith Connections in every lesson (Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs, and more)
- Vocabulary and objectives for every lesson
- 4-week pacing plan and a "How to Use This Workbook" guide
🎯 BY THE END, YOUR STUDENT CAN...
- Define AI in their own words and name its five big ideas
- Explain how a rule-following algorithm differs from a data-driven AI
- Describe how datasets, patterns, and predictions work
- Compare supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning
- Train, test, and improve a simple AI image classifier
- Explain what generative AI does and why it can sound sure while being wrong
- Spot where bias, energy costs, and privacy risks come from
- Decide when a human should check, override, or take responsibility for an AI's decision
👨👩👧 PERFECT FOR
- Homeschool parents who want a faith-friendly, story-rich way to teach AI
- Grades 6–8 students who learn best through narrative, visuals, and hands-on practice
- Co-ops and classrooms that need ready-to-use lessons with answers built in
- Parents who feel behind on AI and want to learn alongside their kids
💡 WHY IT WORKS
Students remember stories. When Watchdog gets fooled, they feel why training data matters. When MAMMON gets hungry, they see why privacy matters. Each lesson comes right after a moment in the story where the concept matters, and then students practice it themselves. They finish with understanding, not just a list of definitions, plus the judgment to use AI wisely.
📄 FORMAT & DETAILS
